Position Description
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Schedule and Event Management: Responsible for preparing schedules of public meetings and events related to abandoned uranium mines of the Phase 2 Expanded Trust; and enhancing public and community awareness on the Navajo Nation through creative and engaging public outreach events; coordinating client and public inquiries. Coordinating community involvement meetings and outreach events with the U.S. EPA and Navajo Nation EPA in compliance with federal and tribal environmental laws regarding the state of work of the Trust. Extensive traveling to mines locations and community events on the Navajo Nation required.
Communication Liaison and Management: Manage the flow of information regarding the scope of work of the Phase 2 Expanded Trust; and formulating information and public messages about general concepts related to abandoned uranium mine legacy on the Navajo Nation, uranium mining processes, environmental impacts associated with uranium mining, and the “Superfund” process of investigation and cleanup (or removal) for members of the Trust Leadership Team to Navajo communities, the Navajo Nation Government, and the media. Communications will also involve public presentations, participation in public gathering events such as fairs, listening sessions, radio talk shows, or chapter meetings; summarizing work activity in reports and meetings, memos, and electronic messages. Navajo speaking is required for all public meetings and events.
Information Preparation and Record-Keeping: Responsible for preparing and formatting information for internal/external distribution. This may include status reports, newsletters, external correspondence and memos, compiling data for oral reports to the public, creating computerized presentations, transcribing and dictation, editing, proofreading and other information preparation duties on behalf of the Trustee interchangeably in the Navajo and English languages. Maintain records of contacts and manage Trust outreach records in an information repository.
Discretion: Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality and exercising extreme discretion in public events when relaying, interpreting, and delivering information related to the work of the Phase 2 Expanded Trust and in all education and outreach activities performed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate degree minimum in public relations, communications, marketing, public health, or environmental sciences related degree; or 8 years of formal community or public relations experience related to highly sensitive situations and issues.
Ability to interact with people; and local and community organizations, as well as federal, state, and tribal officials.
Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary.
Excellent writing, editing, and computer skills are required.
Proficiency in the Navajo Language is required including the ability to accurately describe and interpret environmental, technical, and business processes and programs.
Knowledge of Navajo cultural norms, practices, and general Navajo philosophy.
Salary & Benefits: This position is contractual, and compensated at an Hourly Rate to be negotiated in a written agreement.
Mileage and business-related expenses as approved are reimbursable at current U.S. Government rates.
A vehicle and vehicle insurance are required for this position as extensive travel is required. Health insurance benefits are not available.
TERM: 1 year with renewal options based on performance, community relation needs of the Phase 2 Expanded Trust and availability of funds.
POSITION WORKSITE: This position is mobile at abandoned uranium mine sites of the Phase 2 Expanded Trust in respective Navajo communities and Chapters on the Navajo Nation. Base site is in Navajo, NM
